Items Available Through ILL

Interlibrary Loan service (ILL) is one of the benefits of membership in the Drake Law Library Association program. Many items not available in the Law Library may be obtained through interlibrary loan. Materials that will be requested from other libraries include loans or copies of material not owned by the Law Library, items missing from the Law Library collection, and copies of pages missing from library materials.

The Law Library will not request items owned by the Law Library that are in temporary use or on reserve. If an item is checked out, inquire at the Information Desk about placing a hold on the item so that you can be contacted when it is returned.

Cost

There is no fee to borrow an interlibrary loan item unless the lending library charges a fee. If the lending library charges a fee, this amount will be billed in your quarterly statement. Individuals who lose or damage borrowed items will be billed for all charges and fees assessed by the lending library.

If copies are obtained from another library, our normal document delivery charges apply unless the lending library's charges exceed our fees. In that case, you will be billed for the amount the lending library charges on your quarterly statement.

The Law Library always attempts to borrow material or obtain copies from libraries for the lowest cost.

Receiving and Returning Materials

You will be contacted when interlibrary loan materials are received. Borrowed material should be picked up at the Law Library's Information Desk. Please sign the check out card attached to the material and leave the carbon copy of the card (the thicker bottom copy) at the desk. Copies that are received are yours to keep. Copies can be picked up at the Law Library or can be mailed, faxed, or emailed to you.

Material borrowed through ILL should be returned to the Law Library's Information Desk. ILL agreements with other libraries require us to return materials on time and in good condition so that we can continue to borrow from those libraries. The due dates are set by the lending libraries. If you would like to keep an item beyond the due date, please contact the Law Library so that a renewal can be requested before the item is overdue.

Turnaround Time

The turnaround time for receipt of interlibrary loans can vary greatly from a couple of days to two weeks, depending on the availability of the material and the location and speed of the supplier.

Copyright

The copyright law of the United States (Title 17, United States Code) governs the making of photocopies or other reproductions of copyrighted material. Under certain conditions specified in the law, libraries and archives are authorized to furnish a photocopy or other reproduction. One of these specific conditions is that the photocopy or reproduction is not to be “used for any purpose other than private study, scholarship, or research.” If a user makes a request for, or later uses a photocopy or reproduction for purposes in excess of “fair use,” that user may be liable for copyright infringement. This institution reserves the right to refuse a copy request if, in its judgment, fulfillment of the request would violate copyright law.
