Clark Decision: Celebrating 150 Years of Iowa School Desegregation: Susan Clark

Susan Clark

In 1871 Susan Clark graduated with honors from Muscatine High School and spoke at the commencement. She was the first Black graduate of a public high school in Iowa. Susan married the Reverend Richard Holley and remained an active community member until in death in 1925. On Sept. 9, 2019 the Muscatine school board voted to name a junior high in Clark's honor. The video below celebrates the renaming of the school and includes remarks about the historic legal challenge as well as biographical information about Clark and her family.
