Printing and Copying

Troubleshooting

If you submit a print or copy job and receive a message that indicates you have insufficient funds but there should be funds on your copy card or in your PaperCut account, it may be due to the following reasons:

  1. You have insufficient funds to complete the entire job.
Print and copy jobs are not "billed" until the entire job has completed. If you submit a job whose page count cost exceeds the amount available in your PaperCut account or copy card, you will receive a message indicating that there are insufficient funds to complete the job. This doesn't mean that there are $0 available; rather, it means that additional funds need to be added in order to complete the entire job. Students may add funds through Bulldog Bucks.
  2. There is a problem with PaperCut.
If you have added money to your PaperCut account but those funds have not been dispensed for your use, this is likely an issue with PaperCut rather than the device. For this issue, contact ITS.
  3. There is a problem accessing funds that have been added through Bulldog Bucks. If this is the case, report the problem using the Drake Card Issue form.

If you are a student and are having difficulty logging in using the reader (black box with blue and white flashing light on the right side of the device), it may be due to one of the following reasons:

  1. You haven't activated your card yet.
The first time you log in using your card, you will need to complete a one-time card activation to tie your card to your printing account. To do this, simply use the keyboard to type in your Drake credentials. After you have done this, you will be able to simply hold your card next to the reader to log in.
  2. Your card needs to be reactivated.
System updates can, at times, cause cards to become deactivated. If you have already activated your card but the screen displays a message indicating that your card must be activated, complete the activation process again. If this problem persists, contact ITS.
  3. There may be damage to the card.
If your card is cracked or if you used a hole-punch in order to attach it to a keychain or lanyard, your card is no longer useable and will need to be replaced. In the meantime, you can continue to log in by using the keyboard to type in your Drake credentials.

If you are logged into a Law Library computer and the B&W and Color follow me options are missing from the printer options drop down menu, printers can be added using the following steps.

1. Click on the drop down menu to display all printer options.

2. At the bottom of the printer options menu, click on add printer.

3. A pop-up box will appear. Do not type anything into the name, location, or model boxes. Just click Find Now on the right.

3. A list of all installed printers will appear at the bottom of the pop-up. Select the desired printer option and click ok. The option should then appear under the printer drop down menu.

If there is a paper jam, please go to the Information Desk and ask for help. Even though there are on-screen instructions that illustrate how to resolve the issue, problems with the device should only be handled by library staff.

If you attempt to submit a job through PaperCut and get stuck on the "Submitting" page, your job may be stuck in the queue. If you do not have time to wait for this issue to resolve, you can log in to one of the library computers and print your job directly or you can save your file to a USB and use that to print from the device.

To print using a USB:

  • Save the documents you would like to print to your flashdrive/USB.
  • Log in to the device you would like to print from by holding your ID card next to the reader (black box with blue and white flashing light on the right side of the device) or by typing in your Drake credentials using the keyboard.
  • Once logged in, plug in your USB into the port on the right side of the device, near the display screen.
  • A pop-up window will appear. To select documents to print, touch "Print a Document from External Memory."
  • A list of the documents saved to your USB will be generated, including folders that house individual documents/files.
    • To print your desired document(s), touch each item from the list you wish to print. You can print more than one document at a time.
    • To print a document saved in a folder, touch the folder that houses that document; then touch "Open" near the bottom right of the touch screen.
    • If you need to go back to the previous screen, or back to your main document list after opening a folder, touch the upward-pointing arrow located in the upper left corner of the screen.
  • Once you have selected the items you wish to print, touch "Print."
  • On the next screen, select desired options for color, size of paper, single- or double-sided, and finishing (staples or hole-punch). The "Application" feature provides additional options; add these features by touching them on the screen, then touch "Close."
  • Once you have selected all of your additional features, press "Start."
  • When you are finished, remove your USB. You may navigate back to other device functions such as copying or scanning by pressing the appropriate buttons, or press "Log out" twice.

Note: When printing a PDF from a USB, there is typically a very long delay before the document will print. If you need to print a PDF but are stuck on the "Submitting" page, log in to a Drake computer to print and, under the "Advanced" printing tab, check the box next to "Print as Image" before printing.

If the orange light on the left side of the display panel is lit up or flashing, do not release your print job. Instead, please alert a staff member at the Information Desk and release your job from a different device.
